エンジニアの使命とは何でしょうか？

-公共の福祉のために尽くすこと-　このために、米国のエンジニアたちは、医師や法律家と同様な社会から尊敬を受ける高い専門職レベルに引き上げるため、プロフェッショナルエンジニア制度の設置とともに、倫理規定の制定などに力を注いできました。

米国の全米PE協会（NSPE/National Society of Professional Engineers）では、医師にとってのヒポクラテスの誓詞と同様に、次のような技術者の信条（Engineer’s Creed）を制定しており、この信条は会議などで唱和されています。

As a Professional Engineer, I dedicate my professional knowledge and skill to the advancement and betterment of human welfare.

I pledge:

To give the utmost of performance;
To participate in none but honest enterprise;
To live and work according to the laws of man and the highest standards of professional conduct;
To place service before profit, the honor and standing of the profession before personal advantage, and the public welfare above all other considerations.
In humility and with need for Divine Guidance, I make this pledge.
